London Borough of culture

In 2019, Waltham Forest was the first ever London Borough of Culture and as part of the year long programme of activity, 12 projects were chosen to lead on the Make It Happen Fellowship Funding Strand. Libby’s project was one of the 12!

Read more about the project below:

Libby ran unique, exciting theatre workshops that celebrated the achievements of the radical British female boxers that fought for their right to fight. Workshops complemented the show FIGHTER. Workshops feature opportunities to explore theatre and script writing techniques and featured a boxing class with Team GB boxer Lesley Sackey. With no boxing experience or equipment required, participants were supported to learn how to throw their first punch! Workshop participant all received a professional souvenir photograph of themselves in fight gear and ready to rumble!

There were two public workshops open to all Waltham Forest residents, public workshops were FREE, accessible and inclusive. On site childcare was provided and support workers for those with accessibility needs. Participants wrote their own short scripts and received plenty of practical ideas to continue the development of their pieces.

Four fully funded schools workshops were also available for schools, colleges and alternative provision in the borough. These workshops engaged and inspired young people through theatre and boxing, including a class with Lesley Sackey.

All workshops ran in March 2019, to celebrate International Women’s Day.
